When
James “Willis” Stacy was born on September 27, 1847, in Natchitoches,
Louisiana, his father, Alexander, was 49 and his mother, Eliza, was 21. Willis’
mother Eliza was the third wife of Alexander; Willis had many older half
siblings, some of whom were grown and had families of their own.
Willis grew
up near in the Marthaville area of Natchitoches Parish where his father owned
land. In 1864, 17-year-old Willis was drafted into Company B, Maddox's
Regiment Louisiana reserve Corp. Per the Conscript Act of February 17,
1864, the CSA draft was extended to include seventeen year olds and
men between 45 and 50. From time to
time, detachments of the Reserve Corps hunted draft dodgers and deserters and
herding cattle for eventual use by the regular army. At the end of the war,
Willis’ unit was surrendered at New Orleans on May 26, 1865 and he was paroled
in Natchitoches on June 21, 1865.
His
father Alexander died in 1865 in Texas where he had gone to look for land.
Perhaps James had gone with his father. On
March 22, 1866 James married Mary Jane Edwards in Nacogdoches, Texas. Mary Jane
was born on March 16, 1847 in Arkansas, the daughter of Mahulda Elledge and
John Edwards.
The
couple settled in Nacogdoches, Texas and soon began a family. The first child was born in 1869 and named
John Alexander for both of his grandfathers. Based on the stated birth
locations of their children (on the death certificates and census records), the
family appears to have moved back and forth between Texas and Louisiana. John born in 1868 and Ruben born in 1880
claimed Nacogdoches, Texas as their place of birth. Emory Ann born in 1871,
Susie born in 1875 claimed Louisiana as their place of birth. Henry born in 1874 claimed Madison County
Texas. James born in 1878 claimed
Atascosa County Texas as his place of birth. The youngest Mary Stacy Hobbs flip
flopped between Texas and Louisiana.
In 1880,
the federal census reported the family living in Madison County, Texas. Madisonville the County seat is approximately
95 miles west of Nacogdoches. According to the Handbook of Texas, Madison
County, reported to have been "wild and wooly" before and after
the Civil War, was
referred to as the "Free State of Madison." The family consisted of James
W, a 32-year- farmer living with Mary J. 32, John A. 12, Emerva A. 9, Henry C. 7, Misouria R. 5,
James E. 2, and his mother-in-law Mahulda A. Edwards 77.
In 1900,
the federal census shows the family was living in Nacogdoches County,
Texas. James W, a 52-year-old tenant farmer
was living with Mary J. 52, Paschal 19, Lizzie 14, and his mother-in-law Mahulda
A. Edwards 77. Living nearby is his son James age 21 and his wife Mary B, age
16 who had been married for 1 year. The
census indicated that Willis and Mary Jane had been married for 34 years. Mary Jane had given birth to 7 children, all
of whom were living. Both Willis and Mary Jane are literate.
Mary Jane
died on March 6, 1918 in Nacogdoches, Texas. She was buried in the Christian Cemetery in
Nacogdoches, Texas. James died on March 3, 1925, in Lufkin, Texas, at the age
of 77, and was buried in Christian Cemetery in Nacogdoches,
Texas next to his wife Mary Jane.

Alexander
Franklin Stacy was born on December 12, 1849, in Natchitoches, Louisiana. His
family called him “Frank”. His father, Alexander, was a 51-year-old farmer. His
mother 23-year-old Eliza Ann Wagley was his father’s third wife.
When the 1850
census was taken, Alex F Stacy was
1 year old and lived in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. Other family
members listed on the census were his father AF 51 (a farmer with $400 real
estate holdings), his mother Eliza 25, and siblings Mary 14, Will 12, Rebecca
12, Josephine 7, and Jas W 3.
When the 1860
census was taken, A F Stacy was 12 years old and
lived in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. Other family members listed on the
census were his father AF 62 (a planter with $800 real estate holdings and $700
of personal property), his mother Eliza 34, and siblings Henry 19, Wm H 20,
Josephine 17, and Willice 14, Louisiana 9, Laura J 4 and Rosana 1. His older
sister Nancy was living next door with her husband Levi Johnson and her 3
children.
His
father Alexander Sr. died about 1865 when Frank was around 15 years old. It is
unknown where the family was living in 1870 as they have not been located on
the federal census. It is likely that
Frank stayed in Natchitoches. For he met
and married a local girl named Emma T. Lambert on August 13, 1874. Emma was
born on February 21, 1852 in Natchitoches.
Sometime
before 1880 his mother moved to Atascosa County, Texas where several of his
siblings and their families had migrated to. It is likely that Frank and Emma
moved to Texas about the same time.
Although they haven’t been located on the 1880 federal census, they were
most likely living in Atascosa County, Texas.
The oldest child, “Molly” was born in 1876 in Amphion, Texas which is
near Pleasanton in Atascosa County. A F Stacy was taxed in Atascosa County as
early as 1880 for 2 horse/mules. There was no assessment for any real estates.
Emma gave
birth to 8 children who reached adulthood, all born in Texas; the eldest in
1847 and the youngest in 1866.
When the 1900
census was taken, the family was living in Atascosa County. Frank, a 50-year
old tenant farmer, was literate. He and
his 44 year old wife Emma had been married 26 years. Emma had given birth to 13 children, 8 were
living. Living with the couple were Mary 22, Henry 19, Lee 14, Cleave 12,
Newton 11, Eliak 9, Ira 3, and Oda 1. The census indicated none of the children
could read or write and they were not attending school.
Frank
died on December 9, 1901, at the age of 51. He was buried in Amphion Cemetery in
Atascosa, Texas. After the death of her husband, Emma moved into San Antonio
where she rented a home until after her children were on their own. In 1930 she was living in Poteet with her
daughter Molly; in 1940 she was living with her son Nute in Poteet. Emma died on December 15, 1940 at the age of
88. She was buried in Amphion Cemetery.

Louisiana
Virginia Stacy was born on July 3, 1852, in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Her
father, Alexander, was a 54-year-old farmer. His mother 25-year-old Eliza Ann
Wagley was her father’s third wife.
The first
record we have of Louisiana is the 1860 federal census; 9-year-old Louisiana
Stacy was listed in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana with her parents, 62-year-old
AF and 34-year-old Eliza. Her father was listed as a planter with $800 real
estate holdings and $700 of personal property. Her siblings were listed as
Henry 19, Wm H 20, Josephine 17, and Willice 14, A.F. 12, Laura J 4 and Rosana
1. Living next door was her older sister Nancy, her brother-in-law Levi Johnson
and their 3 children.
In 1861
two of Louisiana’s old brothers joined the Louisiana Volunteer Infantry and
went off to war. Several of her
brother-in-laws went as well. In 1865
when the CSA surrendered, the family was reunited with the returning
soldiers. The family was lucky, all
returned home alive.
Not long
after the end of the war, Louisiana’s father Alexander Sr. went to Texas
looking for a place to settle. Family
tradition says he died and was buried in Texas; Louisiana was around 13 years
old. The family stayed in Louisiana for several more years. It is unknown where
the family was living in 1870 as they have not been located on the federal
census. It is likely that sometime
between 1874 and 1877 the family moved from Natchitoches to Atascosa, Texas.
While
living in Atascosa County, Louisiana met and married John Daniel Adams on
December 17, 1877. The couple settled in Atascosa County and soon began a
family. When the 1880 census was taken, 27-year-old
Louisiana V. Adams was living in Atascosa County with her 33-year-old husband
John D. and her 4-month old baby Lula. Living next door was her sister Laura
who had married Jessie F. Adams. Her
widowed mother Eliza and her younger brother Napoleon were living with Laura
and Jessie.
When the
1900 census was taken, 47-year-old Louisiana V Adam (born Aug 1852 in Louisiana)
was living in Edwards County, Texas in a home she and her husband 53-year-old
John D owned. John was working as a day
laborer. The census indicated the couple had been married 22 years and
Louisiana had given birth to 3 children, all living. The 3 children were all listing living at
home. Lula age 20 was working as a
school teacher, John W 18 was working as a day laborer, and the Robert G 13 was
attending school. Also living with the
family was John E Varley 8 whose relationship to the family was not stated.
In 1910, 53-year-old
Louisiana Adams lived in Justice, Texas with her husband, John D 63 on a farm
they owned free of a mortgage. The census indicated Louisiana and John had been
married for 32 years and it was the first marriage for both of them. Louisiana had given birth to 3 children all
were still living. Living with the couple were their sons John W a 27-year-old
stone mason, and Robert G a 23-year-old laborer who worked odd jobs. Also
living with the family was John V Varley, 17 listed as a boarder who worked as
a laborer working odd jobs.
John was
a CSA veteran; he had served in Company H of the 5th Texas Cavalry. On
October 1910, John applied for a Confederate Pension from the state of
Texas. In his application the Edwards
County tax assessor stated that in September 1910 John and Louisiana owned real
estate valued at $490. According to the pension application John had enlisted
on Sept. 9, 1861 at San Antonio. He
served until the end of the war in May 1865.
In 1920, 67-year-old
Virginia and 73-year-old John D Adams retired were living in Edwards County,
Texas. They were living with their daughter 40-year-old Lulu Crausby a widow,
and their 10-year-old granddaughter Alma. Lulu owned the home free of a
mortgage. John was retired.
When the 1930
census was taken, Louisiana V Adams was 77 years old. She and her 83-year-old
husband John D were living in Edwards, Texas with their daughter Lula M Crausby
a widow. Lula was listed as the owner of
a general farm. The census indicated the John was 30 years old and Louisiana 24
when they married. Living next door in a rental house was their son John W a
47-year-old widower and his 5 children, Virginia A. 16, Willie F. 15, Ruby C
12, Raymond E 6 and Milton A 3. John was employed as a laborer who worked odd
jobs.
On October
19, 1931, Louisiana died of liver cancer in Rocksprings, Texas, at the age of
79. The death certificate indicated she had been ill since June of 1931. Louisiana
was buried in the Rocksprings Cemetery.
She and John had been married for 53 years at the time of her death. John
died on September 2, 1939 at the age of 92.
John was buried in the Rocksprings cemetery next to
Louisiana.

Alexander, was a 59-year-old farmer. Her mother 31-year-old Eliza Ann Wagley
was her father’s third wife.
The first
record we have of Laura Jane is the 1860 federal census; 4-year-old Laura J.
Stacy was listed in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana with her parents,
62-year-old AF and 34-year-old Eliza. Her father was listed as a planter with
$800 real estate holdings and $700 of personal property. Her siblings were
listed as Henry 19, Wm H 20, Josephine 17, and Willice 14, A.F. 12, Louisiana
9, and Rosana 1. Living next door was her older sister Nancy, her
brother-in-law Levi Johnson and their 3 children.

living in Atascosa County, Laura met and married Jesse Franklin Adams on October
23, 1879. The couple settled in Atascosa County and soon began a family.
When the
1880 census was taken, 22-year-old Laura J. Adams was living in Atascosa County
with her 32-year-old husband Jesse F. Also living with the newlyweds were
Laura’s 60-year-old widowed mother Eliza and her younger brother Napoleon age
13. Sam Pickett a 22-year-old day laborer was listed with the family as well. Living next door was Laura’s sister and
Jesse’s brother Louisiana and John D. Adams who were married in 1877.
The 1880
census agricultural schedule shows Jesse was a tenant farmer. The farm had 15 acres tilled and 145 acres of
woodlands. Jesse and Laura owned $120 of
livestock, 4 horse/mules and 20 pigs. It
didn’t appear that Jesse had any field crops.
Sometime
between 1880 and 1886 the couple moved to Devine in Medina County, Texas. Medina County borders Atascosa County; the
distance between Poteet and Devine is about 30 miles. Sometime before 1896, the
family moved to Hays County. Hays County is twenty-three miles southwest of
Austin.
In June
1900 when the federal census was taken, the family was living in Hays County.
Jesse F Adams was listed as the 57-year-old tenant farmer who had been married
for 20 years to 42-year-old Laura J.
Laura had given birth to 6 children, 5 of whom were still living: Annis
16, Ethie 14, Roy F 11, Ida M 9, and Addie R 3. The three eldest children were
attending school.
In May
1910, the family was living in Hays County, Texas. Jesse F, a 62-year-old tenant farmer had been
married 30 years to Laura J. Laura had given birth to 6 children, 5 of whom
were still living. Two of their children
were still living at home, Ida 18 and Addie 13; both were attending school.
In
January 1920 when the federal census was taken, 72-year-old Jesse F and
62-year-old Laura J were living with their only son, Roy F in Buda, Texas (Hays
County). Roy was employed as a general farmer on a tenant farm. His parents were retired.
When the
1930 census was taken Jessie 82 and Laura 72 were living with their daughter
Ida and her husband Edward Mayes. Edward was employed as a tenant farmer on a
general farm in Hays County, Texas. Edward and Ida were married when he was 23
and she was 20 years old. They had two children living at home, Normin 17 and
Harold 8, both were attending school.
Jessie and Laura married when he was 31 and she was 22. The entire
family was literate.
Jessie
died Sept 30, 1930 in Hays County, Texas. He was buried in Live Oak Cemetery in Manchaca,
Texas. Laura died on June 5, 1933, in Travis, Texas, at the age of 75. She was
buried next to her husband of 50 years.

Roena Melissa
Stacy was born April 14, 1859, in Provencal, Louisiana. Her father, Alexander,
was a 59-year-old farmer. Her mother 31-year-old Eliza Ann Wagley was her
father’s third wife.
The first
record we have of Roena is the 1860 federal census; 1-year-old “Rosana” Stacy
was listed in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana with her parents, 62-year-old AF
and 34-year-old Eliza. Her father was listed as a planter with $800 real estate
holdings and $700 of personal property. Her siblings were listed as Henry 19,
Wm H 20, Josephine 17, and Willice 14, A.F. 12, Louisiana 9, and Laura J 4.
Living next door was her older sister Nancy, her brother-in-law Levi Johnson
and their 3 children.
On 19 Dec
1877 18-year-old Roena married 23-year-old John Lafayette Rutledge in Atascosa
County, Texas. They settled in Atascosa County and soon began a family. This is
where we find the family on June 7, 1880, the family was enumerated on the 1880
US federal census as John L. Rutledge, a 25-year-old Farmer, wife Roine M. 21,
and daughter Lucinda 11 months. Also
living with the family was Roena’s brother Napolian Stacey age 14 a farm
laborer.
Roena
died October 30, 1888 in Batesville, Texas at the age of 29 while giving birth
to a daughter who was named after her mother. She was buried in Loma Vista
Cemetery, Zavala County, Texas. 5 known children reached adulthood.
After her
death John married a second time to Sarah Ann Gates widow of William Henry Barnes
on January 26, 1893. The family moved to
Zavala County, Texas sometime before 1900. The 1900 census taken incorrectly
listed the blended family. (I have attempted to correctly identify the
children). 46-year-old John C
Rutlege a farmer, literate, living on a farm he owned free of a mortage,
married 7 years to Sarah A 45 mother of 5 children all living. 9 children were
listed; the Barnes children were listed as Rutlege, the Rutledge children were
listed as Barnes. Here is my reidentification.

The
marriage didn’t take and sometime before 1910 John and Sarah Ann Gates were
divorced. On April 15, 1934 John died in Crystal City, Texas. He was buried in Loma
Vista Cemetery near Roena.

Napoleon
Bonaparte "Bunk" Stacy was born on June 19, 1866, in Natchitoches,
Louisiana. He was the son of Alexander Franklin Stacy and Eliza Ann Wagley. It
is likely that Napoleon was born after the death of his 67-year-old father. His
39-year-old mother Eliza was Alexander’s third wife.
Bunk
spent his early years in Natchitoches.
Sometime between 1874 and 1877 his mother and her minor children moved
from Natchitoches to Atascosa, Texas. Buck
would have been around 10 years old.
Buck was
enumerated twice in the 1880 federal census. He was enumerated as “Napolian
Stacey” a single 14 year old farm hand living with his sister Roena and her
husband John Rutledge. He was also enumerated as “Napoleon Stacy” age 13
living with his sister Laura J and her husband Jesse F Adams. His mother Eliza
Stacy age 60 was living with Laura and Jesse as well.
Tom
Gardner, a leading researcher on the Stacy family says Buck stayed with his
brother Frank Stacy and two half sisters, Becky Meadows and Nancy Johnson in
Atascosa County as well.
He bought
100 acres of land from Dick Hillburn in 1896 on the bank of the Atascosa River
three miles southwest of Poteet. At that time Poteet was only a store and a post
office.
When Buck
was 22, he married Sarah Jane King April 15, 1889 in San Antonio, Texas. Sarah was born April 11, 1862 in Texas
daughter of Sarah Catherine Gardner and James King. They settled in Atascosa
County, Texas where they raised six children.
On the
1900 census, Buck and his family were living in Atascosa County. They were enumerated as follows: 33-year-old Napoleon Stacy a farmer married 11 years to Sarah J age 38.
Sarah had given birth to 6 children, five of whom were still living, Roy 8,
Etta D 6, Ora C 5, Napoleon G 3, and 1 month old Joel.
Just days
after the census was taken, Sarah Jane died in Atascosa County on June 13,
1900. Within weeks, baby Joel followed his mother to the grave. They were buried
in Amphion Cemetery.
Napoleon
continued working the family farm in Atascosa County. When the 1910 census was taken 43-year-old Napoleon
Stacy a widower was enumerated in Precinct 3 of Atascosa County with his four
children; Roy 18, Etta O 16, Ora C 14, and Nap G 13.
Buck married
a second time to Rosa Welch. Rosa and Buck raised 4 children.
Buck died
on March 28, 1932, in Poteet, Texas, at the age of 65, and was buried in
Atascosa, Texas.
